Directions in Vastu Shastra

Vastu direction is the very most important subject. When constructing a house, making sure that everything is in the right vastu direction of utmost importance and this is why it is necessary for people to know all about this.

There are total eight vastu directions, four main and four sub-directions, which are equally important, because every vastu direction has its own importance.

How to find the vastu direction without compass?
Stand in the center of the plot and face to the direction from where the early morning Sun rises. You are now facing East. Raise your left arm to shoulder length. It is now pointing towards North. Raise your right arm like wise. Your right arm is now pointing towards South. And at the back of body West direction is there.

The four main directions in vastu shastra are:

1. East:
A very powerful and most favorable vastu direction. This direction is owned by Lord INDRA. Indra is the Hindu deity responsible for rains, overall prosperity, festivity and power. Indra is very powerful in manipulation. The representative planet for this direction is Lord Sun which itself is a big power that nobody can match. Sun gives growth to life, vegetation etc. it is the direction of prosperity.
The auspiciousness of East direction is recognized to bring good luck, peace, prosperity, harmony and health by effectively using the space with Vastu norms.

2. West :
West direction is being ruled by Lord Varun and governed by element water which is the vital for survival. The corresponding planet for west is a Saturn. Big opening from this direction is not advisable. The east energy, i.e solar energy is not stored in the west if there are big openings. The axis of energy goes east to west as the sun rises from east and sets in the western direction. The west direction is occupied by the lower abdomen, genitals & reproduction organs of the vastu purush. The openings & entries from this direction are not good. It spoils the prospects of income.

3. North:
North is the most prominent direction and recognized as favorable after East. North is ruled by Lord Kubera- God of wealth and Vastu says to keep this side open so as to raise inflow of wealth, success and riches. The planet that rules over this direction is mercury, which makes it really beneficial for people to have offices in this direction. In fact, it has been found that the UV rays cast by the sun have the least negative effect in the northern parts, so having any open space in the northern area would be a good move.

North is the essence of life and any construction should be done according to Vastu because any defect in North or wrong construction can lead to slow growth, more expenditure than earnings, women problems and loss of wealth.

4. South:
The South is generally considered as a bad direction. There is some fear among those who follow Vastu about this direction. This is because of the fact that whether this direction works for people or not.  The owner of this direction is YAM. Yam is Hindu deity for death.

The corresponding planet for this direction is MANGAL.  Closed places in south are prosperous. South stores the wealth in the form of energy. Most importantly, this is the Zone of Fame, Recognition and Social Reputation.

Four Sub- Directions in vastu shastra are:

1.      North-East: North-East is an important direction, it is also known as " Eshan", God's corner, Puja Corner etc. It is considered to be the holiest vastu direction among eight directions in vastu shastra . It’s the direction where most powerful, positive and progressive energies are generated. Once these positive energies enters the home, they enrich the resident’s life with health, wealth, prosperity and overall abundance. This direction should be open and less loaded when compared to all other directions.

2.      North-West: North-West direction is also known as Vayavya corner or Vayu corner.  North-West Zone generates the energy that attracts Support and Helpful people for any cause you pursue. This direction is capable of making a man rich or poor according to its usage. North-west is associated with the development of ladies, early marriage of girls, marriageable daughters should only be given North-west for their early marriage and it is also considered ideal for girls for many reasons.

3.     South-East: South East direction is also called agneya corner and governed by the fire element out of five elements. Since this is the place of fire element hence it controls or rules the fire or zest of human beings for good earning, health (especially for women), physical power and relationships. This direction is most suitable place for kitchen and electrical equipment’s. This essential zone should be kept free from any Vastu defect so to maintain inflow of wealth and good health.

4.      South-West: South West is one of “the most important” direction. The ruling planet of this corner is Rahu and Rahu governs luck, finance, health and stability. South-west should always be higher than other directions and must not have any important area such as kitchen or dining room while this corner must be balanced with heavy weight objects. It is considered ideal for storage, dumping heavy stuff, unused machineries and over-head tank.

Importance of Brahmasthan

Brahmasthan is the center of the square plot.  The center of any object or place is very important.  The nucleus of a cell, the fulcrum of the lever etc. are some examples of important center points. Brahamsthan is therefore an important factor to be considered in Vastu, while constructing a house or any other building.  It is central, holiest and powerful zone of the house. All directions meet at the center of the house and disperse positive energy in all directions. In ancient times, people knew the importance of Brahmasthan and so temples, deities, courtyards, holy tulsi plants etc. were located in the center of village, house of palaces. Every morning for charging the center a pooja of Tulsi was done.
